Germanikópolis [Greek “The city of Germanicus”]
Hieroclis Synecdemus, ed. Aug. Burckhardt, Lipsiae 1893.
Named after the Roman commander J. Caesar Germanicus (d. AD 19). The surname Germanicus was given due to this person's father's victory against the Germanic tribes in Central Europe; it can be translated as "Almankıran" ("German-slayer"). Isauria Germanikopolis, one of at least four Germanikia or Germanikopolis in Anatolia, is first seen in the records of the Council of Nicaea (324). The Turkish form is derived from the Greek pronunciation /yermanik/. In the Middle Byzantine period, it was the principal city of the administrative region called Dekapolis ("ten cities"). Others include: Titiupolis (?), Domitiupolis (Dindebol), Zenopolis (İznebol), Neapolis, Klaudiopolis (Mut), Eirinopolis (İrnebol), Diokaisaria (Uzuncaburç), Lauzados (Lafsa), Dalisandos.

Until the 19th century, it was the center of the Gaferiyat district. According to Evliya Çelebi, "This city is known by a bad name. However, it has notable people." In the late Ottoman period, the administrative center was moved to the nearby town of İlisıra (Yollarbaşı), but in 1954 it was relocated back to its current location. The name was given on 15.6.1956 because General Kâzım Karabekir's family is from here.

In 1967, the town of Sarıveliler was established through the merger of the villages of Turcalar, Küçükkarapınar, and Sarıveliler. It gained district status in 1990, and in 2009, following a referendum, the villages of Ortaköy and Adiller were incorporated into the town as neighborhoods.
